“The utilization of a fictitious marble surface serves as a tool for elevating bodies considered impossible or marginalized, transforming them into art forms to be admired from a distance. By perpetuating Eurocentric ideals through the incorporation of marble-like styling, texture, and silhouette, this approach aims to enhance the quality of representation for bodies deemed octoroon, over-sexed, or black. The addition of a marble surface creates a sense of distance from the body, effectively diverting attention from perceived imperfections or stereotypes associated with the ‘impossible negro/savage body’. Through this technique, the focus shifts towards appreciating the aesthetic qualities of the marble-like surface, allowing for a more nuanced and elevated portrayal of marginalized bodies within visual culture.”
